Sensor spotlight: the pulse counter

The cheapest way to get a utility-grade meter you already own onto a live dashboard, without touching the meter.

The article

The meter on your incoming water line is almost certainly utility-grade already — somebody bills you from it, so its accuracy is not in question. What it lacks is a voice. This spotlight is about the 2-channel pulse counter, the small device that gives it one, and the most affordable way we know to turn a meter you already own into a smart meter.

What a pulse output is

Most water, electricity and natural gas meters have a pulse output: a contact that closes each time a fixed quantity passes through the meter. One tick per unit of volume, over and over, for the life of the meter. Most of these outputs have never been connected to anything.

Reading an existing utility meter without replacing it

The pulse counter wires to that output and does one job: it counts. When a pulse arrives on either of its two channels, the device wakes up and increments the counter; when the count passes a threshold, it transmits the totals for both channels; then it goes back to sleep to save power. That sleep-almost-always discipline is why the battery lasts up to 10 years. Like all of our sensors, it connects wirelessly to the industrial edge computer, with a range of up to 50 km — and two channels means one device can read two meters, water and gas on the same wall.

Pulse weight, and the arithmetic that turns counts into cubic metres

Every pulse output has a weight: the volume one pulse represents. Say the weight is 10 litres. Then 100 pulses is one cubic metre, and the arithmetic is done — the dashboard multiplies counts by weight and charts consumption in cubic metres, litres per minute, or dollars.

The weight also sets your resolution. With a 10-litre weight you see consumption in 10-litre steps, which is more than enough to find an overnight baseline or trip a leak alert.

What it costs you in downtime (nothing)

No pipe is cut and no meter is swapped. The counter connects to the output the meter already has, so the meter your utility trusts keeps doing the measuring — the counter just reports it. An install like this typically happens without stopping production, and if the counter ever comes off, the meter never noticed it was there.

When a pulse counter is the wrong answer

Three cases. If a line has no meter at all, there is nothing to count — a clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter is the tool. If the meter is an older one with no pulse output, same answer. And if you need instantaneous flow rate rather than running totals — watching what a ball-valve adjustment actually did, in real time — pulse counts are too coarse, and you want a meter that reports flow directly.
