Sensor spotlight: the industrial edge computer

The gateway is the least glamorous device in the plant and the one that decides whether you still have data when the internet drops.

The article

Every wireless sensor we install has the same first stop: an industrial edge computer bolted to the wall of a mechanical room. When we first wrote about this device we called it the brains of the operation, and that has not changed. Nobody photographs it. Everything depends on it.

What the gateway actually does

It listens. Every wireless sensor in the plant — a flow meter, a thermocouple, a pulse counter on the water main — transmits its readings over the 900 MHz spectrum, a band chosen because it carries a long way: line-of-sight range is up to 50 km. The gateway collects those packets, processes them with Node-RED (a flow-based programming tool built for exactly this job — wiring hardware, APIs and online services together), and uploads high-resolution data to the online dashboard.

Local buffering — why data survives an outage

Internet connections drop. When yours does, the gateway keeps collecting and stores every reading locally, then uploads the backlog once the connection returns. An outage becomes a delay in the chart updating, not a hole in the record — which matters, because the hole always seems to land on the night you needed to see.

The gateway reaches the internet however your facility prefers: Wi-Fi, Ethernet or LTE. If your IT team would rather the monitoring system never touch the plant network at all, it can run on cellular alone — an isolated deployment with nothing plugged into your infrastructure.

Read-only by design

Nothing in this ecosystem can write to your equipment. The sensors observe; they do not command. The gateway reads and reports. There is no path from the dashboard back to a valve, a motor or a setpoint.

Where it sits relative to your control layer

Beside it, never in it. The gateway is physically and logically separated from your PLCs and existing controls — we do not touch them. The data it uploads lands on Canadian AWS infrastructure and is readable from any phone, tablet or computer.
